John E. Martin will replace Magistrate Judge Andrew P. Rodovich in the Northern District of Indiana’s Hammond Division. Rodovich is retiring from the bench.
Mr. Martin is a deputy federal community defender in Hammond, representing indigent clients. Prior to working as a federal defender, Martin worked in private practice and was a deputy prosecutor in Porter County. He has also worked as a part-time public defender in Porter Superior Court.
Forty-two people applied for the judgeship.
Chief Judge Phillip P. Simon said that Martin “is an outstanding attorney with significant experience representing defendants in federal court and state court, and also as a prosecutor in state court.” Simon noted Martin was chosen from a group of highly qualified applicants and commended the Magistrate Judge Selection Panel “for having done an exceptional job of screening the applicants.”
Martin is expected to join the bench March 1, 2013.
